I remember my senior once asking me during my early years as a young engineer: “What do engineers really do?” The answer, at its core, is simple yet profound: we solve problems. Any problems. Problems of today, problems of tomorrow, tangible issues we can see, latent challenges hidden beneath the surface, and even potential issues that may not yet exist but will eventually emerge.

This perspective is not limited to engineering; it applies to all professions.

If you’re an HR executive, you solve problems about people and performance.
If you’re a Lean Executive, you solve problems about efficiency.

Likewise, when you graduate from a university program, your professional path might differ depending on the discipline you chose. But the common thread is always the responsibility to address and improve situations.

If you are an MBA graduate from the GET-BS, UMPSA, your role should not be confined to doing what other MBA graduates do. You are expected to go further, to deliver something extra, particularly when technical evaluations related to business-critical analyses are required. That being said, the nature of problem-solving evolves as one progresses in a career. When I advanced up the corporate ladder, I realized that being an engineer still meant solving problems. However, the key difference was not in the act of solving itself, but in prioritising which problems to solve first. Every solution consumes costs, time, and energy, resources that are often limited. Learning how to prioritise, not only from a technical perspective but from the broader lens of business strategy, became critical to my growth.

This reality extends to every career path. Making decisions solely based on your professional expertise is one thing; it ensures accuracy and depth. But considering the whole organisational picture, understanding trade-offs, and aligning solutions with business objectives is what defines long-term success. It is not just about being an expert in your field; it is about being a problem-solver who understands the context, the priorities, and the bigger picture.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to your ability to solve problems and your wisdom to decide which problems truly matter.

The Graduate Engineering and Technological Business School (GET-BS) has been instrumental in shaping my thesis on Risk Management using Monte Carlo Simulation and DEMATEL Method for Turnaround Projects in the Petrochemical Industry. This program's unique integration of engineering principles from my undergraduate degree with the project management skills acquired during my master's studies provided the perfect foundation for this complex topic. My bachelor's degree in engineering gave me a deep understanding of the technical intricacies of petrochemical plant operations and the inherent risks associated with turnaround projects. I learned about the critical equipment, the complex processes, and the potential for mechanical failure or operational mishaps.

This foundational knowledge was crucial for identifying and quantifying the specific risks that I would later analyze in my thesis. The project management modules from my master's program built upon this technical knowledge, equipping me with the tools to effectively manage a project from conception to completion. I learned about risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, and response planning. This is where the synergy of the GET-BS became most apparent. I was able to apply the theoretical frameworks of project management to the specific engineering context of petrochemical turnarounds. The thesis itself is a direct result of this integrated learning.

The Monte Carlo simulation, a quantitative risk analysis technique, allowed me to model the probabilistic outcomes of various risks, such as equipment failure or labor shortages, on the project's schedule and budget. The DEMATEL method, on the other hand, enabled me to analyze the causal relationships between different risk factors, helping to identify the root causes of potential project delays. Without the comprehensive and integrated education provided by the GET-BS program, it would have been impossible to tackle such a specialized and interdisciplinary topic. The program didn't just teach me a set of skills; it taught me how to synthesize knowledge from different fields to solve real-world problems. This experience has not only enriched my academic journey but has also prepared me for a career in a field where technical expertise and project management acumen are equally valued.
